  OHSU Neuro-Onc Preresidency fellowship
Posted by: Guest - 05-04-2017, 03:01 PM - Forum: Job openings - No Replies

There is a single pre-residency spot available starting July 1, 2017, within the OHSU Blood Brain Barrier/Neuro-Onc program in Portland, OR. This is a 1-2 year non-accredited pre-residency position with 50/50 clinical and research duties. The department works closely with OHSU Neurosurgery and time spent directly on the neurosurgery service is negotiable. The Blood Brain Barrier Program performs multiple endovascular procedures weekly which you will have the opportunity to assist on.  Other duties include inpatient management, two clinic days, at-home call, and significant time spent on clinical and basic science research.

Benefits of the program include:

Flexible schedule to allow for residency applications and interviews

    OHSU PGY-1 Salary and Benefits

Significant clinical and basic science research experience

    Support for travel to conferences

Direct interaction with OHSU neurosurgery program.

Time spent with neuro-oncology service can translate into accreditation post-residency

1:1 faculty assist on all angio procedures.

The 5 previous fellows have matched into Neurosurgery(2), Neurology(2), and Radiology(1) from this position.

Portland Oregon is an incredible city with great culture and outdoor activities. You will have time to enjoy it!

Please send the following documents to the Program Administrator:

Personal Statement
Medical school transcripts
USMLE Step scores
Letters of recommendation from faculty
Curriculum Vitae
Applicant must be a US citizen or have permanent resident status.

  Mount Sinai sub-i 2016/2017
Posted by: Guest - 05-03-2017, 11:29 PM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (21)

My sub-i experience at Mount Sinai:

Positive:
-Good group of residents.
-Very busy endovascular service.

Neutral:
-OK operative experience
-Multiple campuses
-Interview during sub-i
-New York City

Negative:
-Shitty attending culture.
-Neither program director nor chair cares about residents. Bederson is an asshole. Mocco may seam great, but he's among the best snake-charmers there are.
-The residents were frustrated that PD doesn't have time to meet and always away.
-Extremely slow OR turnover because of the inefficient hospital system.
-Very weak in open vascular.
-Minimal involvement in the angio suite because of several endovascular fellows.
-Third or fourth tier program in NYC. It will always live in the shadow of NYU, Columbia and Cornell.
-Located in the worst part of NYC.

Comment: The main role of PD is resident's education. He didn't attend any of the 4 grand rounds during my time there. The way I understand it from residents that PD is heavily involved in industry and always away for his own business. The chair works closely with simulation industry and desperate to make a name for himself after decades of away. After all it was hard to trust their future plan.

In a nutshell, I don't recommend going there for a sub-i or residency.

  Military options

Getting ready to start residency and have an interest in serving in the military in some capacity at some point. Looking for the option with minimum commitment. Seems multiple attendings have joined after residency for short periods, but am curious how this works. Thanks.

Has anyone heard back from CNS on oral talks? Decision on oral talks usually comes earlier than posters.

Do programs that participate in VSAS use a step 1 cut off? I took an year off for research. Low step 1 (210+), 260+ step 2, passed CS. US allopathic student. Will appreciate any input. i am fairly new to this thread.

  Externships of CV
Posted by: NSGQ - 04-28-2017, 02:51 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

We recently had a visiting professor in neurosurgery at our institution who lists  a month long medical school externship (sub-I) at the University of Virginia on his CV. It's now common to do 2 or more away rotations in preparation to match into neurosurgery so I am wondering if anyone else posts that information on future CV's or resume's after residency.

If you specialize in neuro-onc and removing tumors, do you remove pediatric brain tumors or must you go through pediatric specialization? What's the future of tumor sugery looking like?

Huge Number of Applicants Next Year
Posted by: uhoh - 04-27-2017, 08:23 PM - Forum: How to prep for applications - Replies (21)

I'm getting a sense that there will be a very large number of applicants this next cycle.  There are 6 applicants at my school this year, normally there is one.  My friend goes to a mid tier school in the DMV area and there are 9 applicants from her school.  My other friend goes to a T-10 school and there are 7 applicants so far.  Every sub I, I applied (5) told me they received record number of applications and are completely full.  Duke was full for the months of June and July really early this year, and is likely full for August and September at this point.

TLDR: I think there is going to be a TON of applicants this year, anyone else agree?

  Journal club

Would anyone want to have a monthly thread where we pick an article and go through it?  My program does not have journal club so it might be nice to talk about some papers out there.
