Carolinas Medical Center Neurosurgery Residency - Virtual Question & Answer Sessions
2021 neurosurgery applicants,
We are sorry for the unfortunate and bizarre reality we all find ourselves in during this pandemic. This is usually the time of year where are we are looking forward to meeting many of you during the sub-I season and sharing our unique program with you.
For those of you who weren't able to attend the virtual symposium back in May, we wanted to provide more opportunities for you to get to experience our program and get to know our residents.
We will be hosting virtual Question and Answer sessions on the following dates and times. Please email our program coordinator Ms. Cameron Davis at cameron.davis@atriumhealth.org if you are interested and would like to register for one of the events. These will be very relaxed and informal.
Thursday July 16th 7pm-8pm ET
Thursday August 6th 7pm-8pm ET
Saturday August 22nd 10am-11am ET
We look forward to meeting you. I also would be happy to answer any of your questions directly at any time at vrossi89@gmail.com

Journal clubs/Staying up to date |

Any good websites and resources to stay up to date with the key papers/advances in the field or even some old publications of significant impact? My program doesn't do a good job in journal club so wonder how what residents from other programs do or recommend. I know the easiest way is to browse the JNS, Red journal...etc every month or so but it's cumbersome and sometimes there are no high impact publications

How competitive is 255+ from a low tier school? |

Hey everyone,
Just wondering how competitive someone with a 255-260 step score coming from a low tier MD school would potentially be? Rising m3 so no rotations yet, but in the research department I currently have 1 first basic science paper, 3 2nd, and 3 middle author. Only 2 poster presentations, and no other experiences besides extremely minor volunteer work.
Thanks all. Guess I'm just wondering how a slightly above average step score combines with coming from a lower tier, but recognizable name, MD school.

What are the general opinions of this program. Under the radar or has some recognition? Seems like they've managed to recruit good faculty with mascitelli (lawton fellow...both open/endo), papanastassiou (harvard epilepsy/functional), and Floyd the Chair/PD is MDA trained for onc/skullbase. UCI seems to send their residents here for a rotation too.

I figure it’s time for another one of these. I haven’t posted any before but am in a similar positions to several previous posters. Does anyone know of any potential openings that programs may be looking to fill? Thanks!
