  CS cancelled
Posted by: Guest - 05-26-2020, 09:27 PM - Forum: General interest - No Replies

With CS cancelled this cycle how do you view the following:
(1) applicant without CS (has to study in residency and take time for exam)
(2) applicant with a pass already
(3) applicant with an attempt and subsequent pass

  Stanford 2020 and beyond?
Posted by: Guest - 05-25-2020, 07:10 PM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (14)

Hi everyone,

What is the status on Stanford as a NSG residency with Steinberg stepping down, hiring Mike Lim, and also having JFM on board? I know historically they have been an average-above average program, but what I understand is they are doing heavy outreach to get cases throughout California basically anywhere south of San Francisco.

They have some new hires from UCSF, etc. Is this a good option to train if you want to be in California?

Top 5 bro-y programs? I was between ortho and neuro, and wouldn’t mind some locker room banter. Where can I get my fix of brahs?

  Pandemic matching

Hi all, I appreciate the input upper levels have been contributing to this forum.

I recently found out I had only “passed” all shelves except one “high pass” in peds. Is this a death sentence in neurosurgery? Stats are 242 step 1, 26 neurosurgery pubs (handful first author) I’m from a new west coast MD school with no home program, but have solid letters from my neurosurgical mentors. Step 2 results are pending. I’m not interested in the UCSF, Barrow, or Columbia’s of the world and would be happy to train at any program. My goal is to be the humblest, kindest neurosurgeon possible with superior clinical and operative skills.

If you were an M4 in my position what would you do?

  VA Hospitals

How important is having the option of rotating at a VA hospital when picking residency programs? Can anyone speak to how valuable/not valuable the operative training is?

How easy will this cycle be / how hard the next one?
Posted by: Guest - 05-18-2020, 09:42 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (3)

It seems like a lot of people might be taking research years in order to avoid this cycle. What do you all think that will do for competitiveness this year? What about next year? How many rising 4th years reading this have decided to postpone their application a year?

  Return to NSG Plans

Anyone successful after forced resign coming back to neurosurgery within a year or so?  What did you do to get in?

I plan on getting my MBA in the meantime, creating a startup and emailing programs q3months to see if they have an opening.  I’ll probably go to neurosurgery conferences and maybe hangout with a local department.  My thoughts are is it a waste for the opportunity cost of doing research or going to meetings if it’s not going to help get you in in the end?  Should I pursue another speciality?

Thoughts?

  Matching with no home program
Posted by: tryingtomatchman - 05-17-2020, 10:07 PM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (9)

Hey everyone

Long time lurker here. Rising M4 at low tier US MD school with no home program or department.

You guys don't seem like the types to like BS so i'll cut to the chase. I'm not sure if I should apply this year.

Stats
Step 1: 243
Papers: 4 published, 3 more submitted, 1 in the works
Abstracts, posters, etc: 27 including 1 oral presentation at AANS
M3 grades: all HP except for sat in medicine. no honors
All the research above is in neurosurgery
Salient considerations:

  • Absolutely fell in love with neurosurg in M1. Trying to make it happen. Not sure I'd want to do anything else, but I'm above all things a pragmatic person and not going to shoot myself in the foot by trying to swim up a creek without a paddle so to speak.
  • My school may limit us to 4 weeks away. Not sure if they'll make an exception yet. But we are allowed 1 away if we're applying to something competitive, such as neurosurgery Smile
  • If approved, I'd be doing 1 away rotation at a strong mid-high tier program locally.
  • Don't think a research year would be a good fit for me personally or professionally.
  • I would apply to every program if i did end up applying
Need advice on the following:
1) if i should actually apply given i come from a no name school with basically an average application at best
2) should i apply to a back up specialty if i do apply?
3) how do you think I would fare in your (collective) experiences?

Like many this past season I went unmatched. Any advice for reapplicants? Any successful reapplicants from past years willing to weigh in?
