Interview Invites 2019-2020
May I ask a favor? Can someone post the link to the acgme website that shows each programs number of allowed spots, and the filled spots per PGY level?

I have been trying to find it but was unable to

Seems like it would differ depending on if you don’t have a program and thus have no one to call for you versus if you do have a program but no one is calling for you. I have heard some PDs’ opinions acknowledging that they know not having a home program likely means no one vouching for you but they understand it can be tough to pursue neurosurg without that guidance and give you credit despite the fact. I think it’s a different story if you do have a program and no one is calling, but obviously I have no experience on a selection committee and that’s just my med student opinion and could be far from the truth. I’m sure it depends place to place and how much they value that call.

Are phone calls by faculty an expectation? Seems like it would be annoying to be faculty and have to make/receive a bunch of phone calls for applicants. I was assuming phone calls were only indicated in special situations. For example an applicant with very interviews hoping to not go unmatched. Or an applicant with a very significant reason for wanting to match at a certain program.

Similar question regarding second looks. Are they also considered an expectation to rank an applicant highly?

*very few interviews hoping to denot go unmatched

Phone calls can help move you up a rank list but usually only in cases where PDs/chairs are friends.

Poor form by UC Irvine to send out rejection notifications, followed by an interview invitation 2 weeks later, 1.5 weeks prior to interview. Hopefully the interview opens up to somebody that wants to go there. Good luck all.

Meeting some awesome people on the trail. Keep an eye out for an actual scientist with a lab who is applying this year; a Cambridge PhD; Rhodes scholar; many people who have over 20 pubs.

Who have you all met on the trail?

B. Yes and yes. always best to ask residents if second looks are encouraged. Many programs tend to rank you at the end of the interview day and may stick by their original scores and second looks may not favor into the ranking. If that’s the case with a program, a chair or PD phone call may help.

I understand sending a letter of intent to your #1 program, but is there a formal way to word a letter of interest to your #2 to tell them that you're ranking them highly?
