I don’t have a good approximation of how common rank to match contacts or follow up conversations with PDs/Chairs actually are. Maybe we should start a tally sheet similar to the interview invites one to get a better sense.

Has anyone been doing second looks? I definitely know of applicants from my school who have been invited low key by residents or just invited themselves.

This came up very few times on the trail. I assumed programs that mentioned it would be cool about it, but who wants to fly out for a couple days on a big risk?

Just be aware that the people inviting you are frequently ignorant of the rules of the match and of this cycle due to covid.
