Fired residents
#1
How often do fired residents get into other programs?

Thinking specifically of a Barrow resident who was fired around two years ago. Did he ever get a new position?

What happens if you get fired in general? Do you have to try and match again? What about a senior resident who gets fired? Is their only hope to get another position? It's unlikely another seniro position would be available so what? They're done? Years gone down the drain?

Its fairly common but depends on the motivations of the resident. Many may have not wanted to go into another neurosurgery program and mayched into a different specialty.

Junior residents can transfer or start over in another field. For senior residents, it is far more difficult as many places are not interested in advanced standing residents. Likewise, medicine has become so insular with respect to each track. A PGY-4 would only be eligible as a PGY-2, at best, in another surgical specialty, and have to start over as an intern on medicine to do neurology. Finally, the medicare reimbursement only covers the duration of what you initially matched to do. So if you are completing a PGY-5, and transfer to a radiology PGY-2, you would only have 2 years of training covered.

What do you have to do to actually get fired? Not people just wanting to change fields.

Usually, residents are fired for:
1) dishonesty in relation to patient care
2) can't keep up cognitively or from an energy perspective (e.g. lazy, worn down, or inefficient)
3) low EQ
4) had an egregious incident (any number of things that people do) that caught the attention of the institution.

That barrow resident took a year off for research with Bob Carter and is going somewhere in the ut system for residency.

Didn't a pitt pgy-6 quit or get fired a few years ago? I think Cleveland Clinic has lost a few as well.
