I just spoke to the curriculum office at my medical school. They say that a decision by the AAMC/VSAS is most likely going to come out within the next week (May 11) which will give broad instruction to all medical schools regarding away rotations.

So as much as we're stressed now about "Oh what happens if they accept me for an away, what do I do about letters, etc" - the body actually in charge of medical students might just cancel all aways and deactivate VSAS this year.

Good....some organization that actually is responsible for this will make a decision.

This is good to hear. Each institution doing it's own thing will disadvantage students one way or another

I could be wrong but I don’t think the VSAS decision really matters. My understanding is they are simply a middleman for scheduling aways. People can still schedule aways outside of VSAS. I don’t know of any governing body that can stop all institutions from accepting visiting students.

+1 Direct quote from my medical dean after I emailed him an update with SNS policy: "[name redacted], thank you for sharing. There is a committee representing several national organizations that is going to make a national recommendation which I suspect will be very similar to this one." If AAMC backs up what the SNS is saying I don't see how any residency programs will be able to circumvent this.

Difference is AAMC has oversight; SNS apparently has no authority and can only make guideliness in hopes others follow.

SNS may have seen the writing on the walls based on conversations at the national level and issued a policy preemptively.

Everybody remember the SNS guidelines say the Gen Surg letter is from the Program Director or Clerkship Director and also that they will put up letter templates on the SNS website although the templates are not currently there.

This cycle is going to be nebulous. I was recommended to take a research year and apply when aways are status quo again and I don’t have to get a gen surg letter
