Actually?

No, not actually. By all accounts he's talented and well-liked. Just like Khalessi, and just like anyone else the morons on this forum like to troll for being better than them.

One could argue it is nepotism, as he was friends with the powers at be.  He has, however, been a productive lab director.  Regardless, in no way does research success translate to clinical competence.

No match, but "Excellent L.O.R.s", strong interviews (I think) where I was told to call if I'm interested or "you're our next resident/I'm going to be your chief, any questions?" etc. I was told I "Turned heads" at my Sub-Is, and would definitely match, and hopefully at their institutions. I published with residents during my Sub-Is; 3rd year Medical students at my away rotations even went as fas as personally commend my mentorship when they were on rotation.

Programs called my home institution about me, was told I was being talked about at conferences for my research, etc. etc. Living high until that Match Monday. Still recovering, but had to do the SOAP and all of that. Crazy story for another time but this stuff happens. I can't say all programs are nepotistic, but every PD has their own vision of the program. Some want crazy board scores, others want applicants from big name schools, and sadly others take relatives, etc. But regardless, many also follow a really just process, and everyone I met on the trail who matched (and some who didn't) were definitely great candidates who deserve it as much as I felt I deserved to be there.

Neurosurgery is a small field, and the rank/match process can get really complicated or complex.

On a similar topic, has anyone here really studied the match? I heard the NRMP website's explanation is washy. The actual match, from my outside resources, is supposedly a "bubble sort?"

What was your step 1? I'm guessing from its omission it wasn't very high.

From the explanation on NRMP if a program #1 ranks candidate A over candidate B, candidate A will displace candidate B at program #1 regardless of where they rank Program #1, if candidate A has not matched at a program ranked higher.

That is basically the fundamental principle of the algorithm to my understanding.

Is there a way to find out what the match success rate was for this year as well as the previous ones?

Were there people that didn't match last year that matched this year?
