Will research with a big name help someone who left the field to get back in?

It takes luck, time, and an opportunity.  All research will show is you are still interested in the field.  No amount of research will make you more competitive.

Research that advances the field will never hurt. Research just to get your pub count up w/o significant findings to the field will likely result in being stagnant. For the spirit of the original post, I do know people with 0 pubs who have matched. They are the people who keep to clinical neurosurgery. Both of the people I know had significant things going for them (to keep anonymous lets just think olympic trial athete, pro athlete, royalty, etc.).

Productivity depends mostly on you. Why are you saying “do a research year in a productive lab” if you mean “look for a place where you get publications with little work”?

That's simply not true. Some labs are completely disorganized and have horrible methodologies. Even the best would have difficulty at those places. You can't really tell until you work in the lab. But a good proxy is research output in the forms of publications.
