Would it even be a big deal if Mumaneni left? Ames and Clark are both probably better.

Yeah. Muomemnoeni is a bigger name than Clark and definitely a better surgeon. He got his MBA recently and expressed frustration that at his level he was stagnant - whether cases, income, etc. He hit the ceiling of being a good academic neurosurgeon, and so the only place to go upwards is being a business owner/boss.

Anybody with talent leaves academia as soon as possible, which is partly why academic medicine is so stagnant, and also why the training at “big name” institutions is not what uninformed 4th years think it is

Prodigy of Charlie Wilson. Also, was smart enough to create a private practice but maintain his connections to UCSF.

Every neurosurgeon outside of academia makes 7 figures. Source: a neurosurgeon who makes 7 figures, as do all of my partners in the practice.

You can make seven figures doing just locums and case review. Seven figures is great. Equity is better.
