I prefer it this way, a high step 1 seems more attainable than 25-30 "research experiences" (whatever that means), but what do I know, I'm just a padawan looking for a jedi master.

Step 1 gets you the interview far more effectively than research. But so does your home program and Sub-I. Research is more of a subjective criteria. Some programs don't care much, some just want to know you can do research and some want to see a few things published. Don't over estimate research. Nobody expects you to have discovered the cure for anything. Just show that you have interest in research and that you are capable of producing a few, including a couple as first author. You are far better off to show that you are a humble hard worker at your Sub-I than have your name on 30 papers.

I have a high step 1 + research but no love. This process is mysterious.
