any data about where in their list folks matched?
#1
Is there any data out there about where in their rank list people tend to match? I'm getting the feeling that putting a place lower than 1st (and therefore not being able to tell them they are first) kind of kills your chances there but i'm not sure if that's real.

I dont know of any data on it other than the mean number of ranked programs to match which doesnt give you any specifics.

What gives you this feeling?

Do you think that's wrong?  Just some conversations I've had with people in past matches who suggested that people tend to match at their #1 or waaaaaaay down their list.  I'm asking because I'm trying to figure out if that's real -- it very well could be, I have no idea. I'm a good applicant but i'm not the the best of the best and i'm not delusional enough to think i can go wherever i want, so i'm trying to better understand the end strategy here.

Many programs want the same people as their top picks. Only one program will get a person. We frequently drop into the top 10 or so candidates.

And keep in mind that more people applied to more programs this year, and likely will be attending more interviews.  If more top applicants go on 20+ interviews this year (seems likely so far according to this forum) programs will have to go down a bit on their rank list.

I think OPs question (and mine) is; how low did people fall on their own preference list when they matched?

So do 73% of people match at one of their top 5 vs 83% in top 10 etc.

From anectodal experience people seem to want the places that want them and most people I’ve talked to about it matched within their top 5.

I’m not sure if that’s true or not though in general.
