Neuro ICU/Interventional Neuro Sub I
#1
Does anyone know of any schools with neurosurgeons heavily involved in the Neuro ICU and/or interventional neuro? I want to get some exposure to these during M4 but would be great if I could do it at a program where the neurosurgeons are involved in those specific areas. Dually important because I am at my limit for months of neurosurgery I can do during M4, so hoping this is an extra avenue to getting facetime with some departments while still getting credit for school.

Seems like most places the neurologists run the NICU and the radiologists run the interventional neuro program.

Check VSAS, and no there is no one specialty that owns the NICU

I would check the following:
-Michigan. The neuro inntensivists there are all under the department of Neurosurgery. They actually play an important role in selecting future residents. You spend an entire week in the NeuroICU.
-Colorado. They made a big deal during the interview process on their ownership of he ICU. Also involve their intensivists in the interview/selection process.
-UNC. On of the seniors just finished his Neuro ICU fellowship during the research years.
-Baylor. They claim that at the end of training you are CAST Neuro Intensivist board certifiable. Meaning that all you have to do is take the boards exam as you have already fulfilled the training requirements by completing training there.

I'm a little confused about the interventional neuro part of your question. How does that differ from endovadcular neurosurgery procedures?

As in an interventional neuroradiology (radiology dept) or interventional neurology (neurology dept) VSAS elective that has neurosurgeons heavily involved with whom I can work with since I am at my limit for months of neurosurgery.

Oh I see. Are these in addition to the standard neurosurgery away rotations?

Case Western has CAST certified program with at least 1 neurosurgeon in the neuro-ICU, at least when I was there.
