Historically good schools to attend for the neurosurgically inclined: Columbia, HMS, Michigan, UVA, Pitt, UCSF, Duke, Yale, Hopkins
Schools that have recently been putting out high quality NS applicants: Case Western/CCLCM, Penn, UFlorida, Vandy, Jefferson, Stanford

How is Northwestern?

As a medical school for a neurosurgery applicant? Very good. The training program has gone through some ups and downs but seems to be on the upswing now.

Hi, I have almost the exact same stats as the second person asking about their chances, but have no first or second author pubs(16 clinical report pubs with 12 posters/talks) will this hold me back? What tier, if any, so I have a good chance in matching in?
Thanks

How important are grades? Getting worked on shelf exams, but have a good step 1 score and research

How important are the comments then for clinical grades? My basic issue is high-pass-ing everything except surgery OB and medicine (honors x3) as an M3.

I mainly received HPs during almost all of my 3rd year clerkships and was successful at obtaining interviews at most of the "top" programs. It came up during only one interview the entire cycle. If the rest of your application is good (step 1, LORs from home/sub-Is, pubs), you can be OK without 3rd year honors. That said, it certainly doesn't hurt and not having it may be a deal-breaker at some of the more clinical/less academic programs.

Not true at all. Pretty sure a PD at AANS this weekend said they've never read a MSPE before. Neither are "exceptionally important", i wouldn't even say their marginally important.

When it comes to grades just don't fuck it up too bad. If you are in the bottom 50% of your class or have some failure or deficiency that's obviously a red flag. If you are AOA then it makes you look great and can make up for a shitty Step1. Everything else in between is a wash. None of the people reviewing your app have the time to figure out what these grades are based on, how subjective they are, how to compare them to schools who don't give grades at all, etc etc.

And just like with most things, it differs from program to program. I'm sure there's a couple out there who really care about your grades, but for the most part no one gives a shit.

I had two honors, two near honors, and 3 passes and matched this cycle. Maybe I missed out on some interviews at big name places but that’s bad okay.

We have all worked hard to get here. Even though I was lucky to pull off the honors that I have received, I still feel like not getting all honors reflects poorly on my work ethic, even though I have busted my ass for both honors evals and good (but not honors) shelf scores. Im glad to hear someone made it through without being 100% perfect in all aspects of life
