I think it really comes down to looking at their recent grads and seeing where they ended up after (fellowship, academic, private etc) and asking yourself if you'd be happy with that. This is of course making an assumption that they're competent surgeons.

But he did it by bringing in and training the best, not because he himself was the best there was. You should be wary of programs where if 1 guy leaves the program is in shambles
