  Neurosurgery Residency
Posted by: johnsmith - 08-08-2019, 10:18 AM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (1)

Do you have higher chance of getting into a neurosurgical residency if you graduated from the medical school affiliated with the residency? For example, if I graduated from Stanford/Hopkins Medical School and wanted to match into Stanford/Hopkins Neurosurgery, how much of an advantage would I have over an applicant from another medical school?

How to stand out on sub-i/trail?
Posted by: Guest - 08-04-2019, 09:32 AM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (3)

Every program seems to have different expectations out of student rotators from glorified shadowing to actively updating the list and being involved in decision-making. What are some initiatives that medical students can take in your program or programs you've seen which are impressive and set them apart?

How about at interviews when there is less time to "impress?"

  Neurosurgery in the States
Posted by: fuego_ag - 08-04-2019, 07:11 AM - Forum: General interest - Replies (4)

Hello all,

Through my message, i will be asking you if i have a chance to get a PGY-1 Neurosurgery position in the USA.
I am a PGY-1 Neurosurgery resident.
Me and my family are moving to the States soon. I was about to apply for research (paid) position for 2 years in a program there.
I have a good CV with a lot of volunteer work and research experience and waiting the submission of several papers.
I did one year of prelim general surgery in an ACGME-i accredited program in the middle east with 6 months of Neurosurgery rotation that allowed me to take several recommendation letters from different American Board Drs.
The problem is that i got 207 on my step 1 done in Med 1. It was too early.
I heard about the possibility of making it pass/fail then.
Can you give me your kind recommendations to know about the possibilty of applying to the NS program after years of research and maybe prelim general surgery?

Thank you

  Rotators thus far

Anyone had any impressive rotators this season? So far we have only had 1 of 8, but  all were good on paper.

  2018-2019 trail standouts

Now that the dust has settled from the past year’s trail, are there examples of applicants who particularly stood out? If so, where did these folks end up matching?

  Putting Elective time on CV
Posted by: GUEST1029 - 07-30-2019, 10:56 AM - Forum: General resident issues - Replies (2)

How do you guys go about advertising any subspecialty elective time youve done on your CV? I've doing 6 month blocks of sub specialty training after my chief year and want it to stand out on a CV but this isn't always accredited.

  Question about likelihood of matching.
Posted by: uncle_herniation - 07-29-2019, 11:11 AM - Forum: General interest - Replies (23)

Hey All,

So happy I found this site, as it seems like a great resource.

I just wanted some feedback on my likelihood of actually matching.

I am a US DO student with honors in preclinical years, SSP (honors society) membership, and alot of volunteer work.

My main problem is a 216 on step 1. I know this very, very less than ideal, but it what I have to work with. I just started M-3 and my plan is to crank out good research and kill my rotation scores/Step 2. As far as research goes, I have my own project in the area of pediatric brain cancer I am going to begin working on, and I am applying to any research rotations I can for my elective time this year. I have also been fortunate enough to have two cases on my first rotation that I am publishing studies on.

I'm trying to find any opportunity to make connections in the neurosurgery world, as my school does not have a program.

I'm remaining optimistic, but my Step 1 score often feels like a fatal blow.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated! If there's any other info needed for you to weigh in, don't hesitate to ask.

How is Northwell/Hofstra's Sub I experience?
Posted by: nycapplicant - 07-26-2019, 08:13 PM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (3)

Hi,

Applying next year, and looking to stay in nyc area.  Don't think I have a shot at Columbia or Cornell, and looking at other programs in the area. What do you guys think about Northwell? Anyone do SubI there recently? Wanna share your thoughts?
