  UF vs Miami
Posted by: Guest - 04-05-2019, 11:35 AM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (15)

Currently deciding between these two locations to rotate in August. I'm unfamiliar with the reputation of these two programs (and southeast programs in general) and would welcome any advice

  M1 unsure of specialty
Posted by: Guest - 04-05-2019, 02:33 AM - Forum: General interest - Replies (2)

Hello! I am a current M1 wrapping up my second semester right now. I have shadowed some residents in both clinic and the OR but I still feel like i don’t really know enough about being a neurosurgeon to commit fully yet. I shadowed for almost 12 hours on my off days but maybe this wasn’t enough for me. I wanted to ask what are some things that I could do to get a better sense of pursuing neurosurgery and what worked for you in finding neurosurg as your fit.

Advice for away rotations at Pitt and Buffalo
Posted by: Guest - 04-04-2019, 11:13 PM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (2)

Hey guys!

I hope all is well, I was able to secure away rotations at Buffalo and Pitt, does anyone have any advice on how to kill them? I need to do well to make up for lacking parts of my applications (per the advice of students on here).
A bit about me- HP almost all rotations except surgery and OBwhich were a P(evals were all H, shelf kills me), 225 step and 14 pubs with posters/presentations (8 written)

I appreciate all the advice, you guys always have words of wisdom here so anything is great! I know that I need to kill step 2 so I'm taking that before I start my away rotations.

  Most Selective Subinternships?
Posted by: Guest - 04-04-2019, 05:32 PM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (7)

Are there any subinternships that are particularly selective or are known to be more difficult to secure a spot in?

Anyone have any information on Wake Forest's sub-i? Combed the forum but couldn't find anything and am really interested to hear how the rotation is from anyone who's been there recently

  Application Dates

When do the places that haven't opened applications for away rotations typically post them on VSAS?
UNC, for example?

Has anyone heard back regarding sub-i decisions? Any concept of when we can expect to hear back?

  Cavernous sinus lesion
Posted by: highlighter - 03-29-2019, 04:30 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

Please excuse my intrusion into the neurosurgery board, but thought I'd throw an odd case out there.  I'm a radiologist, and have been shown a case of a smoothly marginated, nonenhancing lesion in the cavernous sinus.  It contains a nodular component surrounded by fluid, and the nodular component is approximately isointense to brain on various sequences.  On the coronal images, the soft tissue/nodular component is not well separated from the temporal lobe tissue above, so my primary consideration is a small encephalocele or less likely ectopic rest.  The lesion is causing a 6th nerve palsy.  A quick search has found a potentially similar case:

(Cavernous Sinus Encephalocele: Surgeon Beware

ArticleinJournal of Neurological Surgery, Part B: Skull Base 78(S 01):S1-S156 · March 2017 with 48 Reads
DOI: 10.1055/s-0037-1600820

My question lies in the feasibility of fixing such a lesion, and if there are certain centers or individuals that would be more experienced or receptive to such a case.  Would a typical academic center have a skull base surgeon that deals with this kind of case? Thanks for any guidance.
