They will have a new PD and Chair in the next couple years

What happen to current PD?
Haglund is still there but I think that the plan is that one of the assistant PDs will take over the role and he'll stay on faculty, working more on the surgical autonomy and international neurosurgery programs that he started.

why did he take over as the PD from the prior PD?

still haven't answered this question

Why don’t you email him and ask him ?‍♀️

Haglund has been there for decades. An assistant PD wanted to try it for a year to potentially take over but decided it was more work than expected.

This is unlikely. You only step down as PD after 1 year if you're asked to. Pre-interview I asked my friends at other programs and they heard similar rumors as I did. Who knows, but he's not even listed as an associate or assistant PD any more so there's probably some truth to the rumors.

UNC *Pays* money but Duke doesn't.

And you know this because...?

High profile attendings will occasionally interview at these types of places. When you advance in residency you may become closer with these attendings, and you may have a conversation of a beer or 2 that involves what offers they've received.

Sounds like that attending got a lowball offer because Duke didn’t want them. Believe me, Duke has deep coffers.

Generally speaking more prestigious institutions pay less because they can. Its not hard to lure good people to a Mayo or CCF ect because they have good infrastructure research support ect. Also generally speaking those in academics want to be at those places to advance their careers. For all those reasons the salary becomes less important and usually less of an inviting component.

Agree on this. Feel like the reason is probably more along the lines of his age. Oyesiku is 65-70 and Duke is going through a chair search because Sampson moved on after only 5 years. I would guess they want somebody in their early to mid-50s so that they don't have to do a search again in 2025. Just my two cents though

^ Much better answer than "money". Still tho to be making career moves when more than half of your living years have been spent at a single institution means that the grass must have been pretty damn green over at UNC

I get the impression that Oyesiku has been receiving chair offers for a while and likely was just a little bit more choosy in trying to find his best fit. Happy for him, kinda cool to hear the news
