It's also conceivable, given how slow interviews are going out, that many people are hanging on to extra interviews that conflict with schedule, in hopes to trade as later interviews become available. I think a resident posted earlier that if it is midway through october and you don't have any, be worried. So you still have some time.

Considering that programs that sent out their first wave have now rejected some but not all students, I imagine that further interview invites are possible

That sounds cool and comforting! I spoke to one program coordinator and she said the same - that there is possibilities for new invites based on cancellations later in the cycle. However, I did not think that rejections mean new interview spots. I thought those who got rejected did not get any interviews at all in the first place.

I don't think that programs are going to be adding new dates/interview spots.  I think the other post was referring to what the program coordinator said: as cancellations come through, applicants may be extended invitations.  As an example, Utah extended it's invitations; among those who did not get invitations, some were rejected and some were not.  Stands to reason that perhaps there's a short list for invitations should they have cancellations.

How many would you say is enough to not be concerned right now? I have 5 and based on charting outcomes it looks like the average successful applicant ranked 16 places last year.

I also have 5. There’s a lot of schools that I applied to that haven’t sent out invites yet, so i’m not worried. If I didn’t have any by now, I’d start looking for a red flag in my app, but since I have some I’m pretty content.
