Yeah, just look at them, taking away all the residency spots shamelessly.

I do understand the frustration. I am with you, but they deserve some credit as well though IMO. I am from a top 20% program, and IMG researchers applying from our institution have 250+, 30+ pubs, 50+ presentations, over three years of research experience plus five years of clinical experience. Still they are trying to contribute to our country. Personally I don’t think I could become a better neurosurgeon than them, given their work ethic, personality, and diverse life experience. I just respect them. Just putting this out there. Not directed to anyone.

To your point, my institution's IMG has been teaching our residents and medical students and already helped several medical students match into neurosurgery publication-wise, presentation-wise, and skill-wise. I think they deserve it too IF that is what they want.

Anyone not care about any of this and just want to match

Not sure if this offer is still on the table but I can swap. eras2019.mal@gmail.com

I have been looking at this thread for some time, just trying to find out when interviews are coming out. This is my first post, but with all the conflicting information in this thread in terms of interview invites, I was curious what is the appropriate amount of interview invites to have at this stage of the game? I have 5 currently. I won't share stats (suffice it to say I'm average in some areas, strong in others, weak in others still,) but I'm honestly not sure if I need to be relaxed or very anxious and exploring other options at this point. Any insight from my future colleagues would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Similar situation ^ with only 6 invites. Guess it’s time to explore other options..
Did u interview at some of your Sub-Is?

I've heard of quite a bit of people with very few interviews. It might be a result of this year's higher competition/more applicants. I don't think anyone will be able to precisely predict. It will depend on how good relationship you have with those few programs and if any of them will rank you highly.

Thanks for the insight everyone. I am reaching out to my advisor for further direction. Might not be in the cards for me, but I also think it’s too early to tell, and I’m not giving up. I still have yet to get an invite from one of my subIs. I feel if I were not a good applicant, someone would have told me by now. Thanks everyone again!

At least from the NBME 2018 Charting Outcomes stats, the "mean number of contiguous ranks" (i.e. the mean number of interviews you had to make a sufficient rank list) was 16.4... That's at least for a 90% probability of matching. Not saying that 5 or 6 invites isn't going to get you to that point, but the data should give you an idea about your confidence level moving forward. May want to look at other options as well. Good luck.

I think that 5-6 II if you KNOW you're a strong interviewer can be enough.  A lot of applicants can be really great on paper, but fall flat in person.  A strong interview can overcome a lot.

Advice to couples-matching, competitive candidates: If you're normal, it shouldn't affect your odds unless you make it an issue and tank your interviews. I would only bring up to PD and chairman; you have little time with most interviewers don't worry them with reasons you may not end up at their program. You may match lower in your pool if your SO is not very competitive. Rank all the possible combinations if you can. Give it your all, but you're not better than everyone else and even if emails to program coordinators help get you an interview you may be less likely to get in there unfortunately keep in mind.
