Methodist straight up asked us with our top three programs were. Glad I didn't blow a few hundred bucks on travel and lodging just to exclude them from my rank list this year

Not sure who posts this stuff, but I can't imagine changing my ranking based on one faculty member asking me a question like that. The best program for you is the best program for you. I wouldn't let some stupid little thing cause you to make a bad decision

I think it's a problem when that "one faculty member" happens to be the chair or PD. Every single program I have interviewed with this year has had their chair sit down with their applicants to give them serious consideration for their program - except for this one. The chair didn't say one fucking word to me the entire interview. This program did nothing to convince me to come there especially in light of the fact that we can't even see what their facilities look like.

I did. You realize it is a joke to the illegal question right? No interviewer should be asking what applicants top 3 are.

Neurosurgery out of all specialties is probably the one that respects rules like these the least. When I was an applicant I was asked verboten questions at every single interview. It continues on with work hours once you match and doesn't get any better. If you're a med student trying to match and looking at 7+ years ahead of you, the sooner you come to accept this, the less painful it will be. When you're a resident and your colleagues in peds and medicine are complaining about violating duty hours once, you will resent them.

I'm doing just fine in neurosurgery. I wasn't talking about the joke, obviously you wouldn't say that to the interviewer. I was talking about "no interviewer should be asking" XYZ. If you expect people and programs to follow all the rules of the NRMP and ACGME, you're in for some pain.

PS you're going to meet the most uptight people you've ever seen in residency. being uptight is not incompatible with neurosurgery at all. wear a helmet the first time you tell someone they need to to take a joke.

Not really sure why we're talking about work hour limits in a conversation about illegal questions, but ok. Plenty of programs ask some variation of what # of programs we are applying to or where else we are looking. Context is key here, it was one malignant question after another by the Methodist PD who made no effort to seek common ground and convince applicants why their program should remain high on their rank list. It's a buyers market this year and it blows my mind how some programs cannot put their best foot forward for literally fifteen fucking minutes over a livestream.

The point about the work hours is that the disregard for certain rules is not limited to interviews and the match. Asking illegal questions is not as much of a sign of a malignant program as it is in peds or whatever. Outside of truly offensive questions, it's best not to get too worked up about them because it doesn't end there. I don't know much about the Methodist program but I've heard it's pretty non-malignant.

Curious about your buyer's market comment—you mean because the top applicants are getting more interviews and holding onto them instead of canceling because they don't have to travel? That probably changes the calculus a little but I don't think it's ever a buyer's market in the neurosurgery match these days.
