This. What sets these places apart is the infrastructure and resources they can allocate to publishing, and the drive of faculty to create projects and get them organized. I'm sure the students are motivated and talented at these places, but I don't think their motivation and talent is so much superior to students at mid- to lower-tier schools such that pure ability is what got them 50 pubs while the other student had 1 or 2. One student simply can't be that productive without having some help and resources, but right now residency programs don't do a good job of seeing past the pure numbers. It's difficult when there aren't a lot of objective criteria and one test score was done away with though.

Totally. I think that's one of the worst parts of Step I going pass fail. I can't even imagine the kind of research/extracurricular/leadership BS arms race that's going to take place. Third year is also going to be a bloodbath. If people think it's annoying to get good evals and honor just wait until Step I and all the preclinical courses are P/F.

Applicants should take Step 2 CK in time for ERAS submissions. We’ll want some number to look at if possible, we know it’s easier to have 50 pubs at certain schools.

This is so true...if only faculties take this discrepancy into consideration instead of asking the questions “why you don’t have a lot of pubs” why you don’t have first author”...my home program is so shitty...no matter how hard I work or push by literally doing everything...it will end up being on someone desk or just limbo lol.

Yeah, clinical grades are bad. I almost wish the p/f status were reversed (graded preclinical and p/f clinicals) - grades were never meant to measure anything besides ability to memorize and test well, you can't really "grade" someone's personality as if it's an objective thing.

Completely agree. It would be more like a college GPA then and show your work ethic over a prolonged period of time.
