I have been watching match results for years since I matched. I can tell you that it's unfair game. When I was an applicant I used to hear that match process is fair and all that "fit" bullshit. Now I am in the selection process and know how things work. Let me tell you something: it's the worst unfair game. Examples that stand out in this match:




Bottom line: your main goal is to become a neurosurgeon. Everyone has preferences where they want to match, but don't forget the main goal.

212 US seniors applied for 218 total slots.  183 matched.  So that's a 84% likelihood of matching as a US senior applying.

Also, 3,393 ranked positions in that 212 that applied, so the average rank list included 16 programs.

When do you need to take a year off to do research? What should your research profile look like come ERAS time? Obviously an M3 going in with 0 prior research would benefit from taking a year off, but how about someone with a few NSGY-related publications under their belt? When does a year off for research start creating diminishing returns?

i love nsx, cant picture any other specialty other than it. loved my rotations, i could function chronically sleep deprived, but feel like shit 100%. how do you overcome the sleep barrier? should i consider another specialty if i value sleeping at least 8 hours a day?

Has anyone else noticed a dramatic increase in 2017 in JNS review time? Before this year it was rare for a paper to take longer than a month and a half to receive a decision, and now it seems to consistently take 2-3 minimum.

If I'm applying for an away at a program which usually has a lot of rotators (Baylor, Pitt etc....), should I apply for other aways that month as a back up? If so, how many? Average applicant.
