Step score and schools to do a sub-i
Posted by: Away - 02-28-2017, 02:10 AM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (6)

I was wondering if anyone could list a few schools for each step 1 score. Obviously there are many other factors but let's assume average everything else (grades, research, LOR).
What would be good schools to apply to, and a safety or two for each of the following:

260+:
240-259:
220-239:
210-220:

Obviously top programs if you scored a 260+. Really just looking for a few schools in the other categories. I'm assuming no programs if <210 but please add a school or 2 for this category  if you think they would still have a shot and should do a sub-i.

Thanks!

  Percent going into fellowships

What percent of graduates are going on to do fellowships after residency?

Is it necessary to do a fellowship with all programs now being 7 years?

  Late to discover neurosurgery
Posted by: Bruins08 - 02-25-2017, 09:08 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (14)

I am currently finishing up my MS3 year and on my surgery rotation.  Just finished my NSGY sub-rotation and absolutely fell in love.  Really cannot see myself doing anything else.  The problem is that I never considered this possibility before and don't really have any legit research to speak of.

I have a 255-260 Step 1, top 10% of my average-ranking SE US MD school, am junior AOA, and have great 3rd year marks.  When it comes to research I only have 2 poster presentations on some basic science immunology stuff; no pubs.

Should I give up on the idea of NSGY entirely?  Should I consider a year off? The idea of not matching terrifies me.

Thanks!

  Sub I at reach schools
Posted by: Guest - 02-25-2017, 01:19 AM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (2)

Should we be doing Sub I at reach schools or try for schools that may be more safety wise.  And is there a range of schools for step score ranges.  And are step scores all that matter?

260+: ?
240-260: ?
220-240: ?

Thanks!

Just wanted to know your thoughts on Yale program. I was unable to schedule a second look because my schedule was backed with other interviews and second looks. Would love to hear about second look experience commenting on the operative experience.
