I have been hearing about all those crazy salaries of 600K to 1 Million in the trail and just thought of calculating taxes. So if your starting salary is 600K in NYC or CA (which is impossible to earn in academics as a starting salary), you pay 51% in taxes in NYC and slightly higher in CA...Seriously WTF!

How early should you apply to VSAS? Should your app be in the first day, or does delaying 2 weeks not make a difference?
Also, I can't find this anywhere, are our Step scores automatically uploaded to VSAS or do we have to request them from the NBME?

What is the pediatric neurosurgery lifestyle like? What's a typical week? How is call usually handled?
What is the case load like? A lot of spine or what?
What's pros vs cons of adults vs peds?

How important would you say the Step 2 CK score is (for US graduates)? I have had people tell me (in neurosurgery) that it's not all that important, especially if you aren't trying to make up for a lower than average Step 1 score. However, the 2016 NRMP program director survey has it listed within the top 5 ranked importance for getting an interview, but later on the majority states they are only looking for a passing score on Step 2 CK. That being said, there was only a 30.5% response rate from neurosurgery program directors, and so I'm looking for some additional feedback and information. (I understand this is likely somewhat program-dependent as well, based on the survey responses.) Source: 2016 NRMP Program Director Survey pages 58-64

Why does neurosurgery never make the highest paying medical specialty lists? What's salary can you expect one year out of residency? What about 10-15 years out of residency? I got loans on loans to pay back.
