Start NS research as MS1 a good idea?
Posted by: Guest - 09-11-2021, 11:01 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (7)

I go to pass/fail school. Do u think NS research as an MS1 is a good idea? I am thinking of contacting neurosurgeons for research opportunities related to chart review and case studies.

HOWEVER, I have read on here that early research can be a negative? Someone wrote that they prefer candidates who explore all fields so what is it?

Thank you all so much!

Programs requiring Step 2 for interview
Posted by: anon - 09-11-2021, 04:25 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (2)

Does anybody know of any top programs requiring Step 2 before interview invitations? Did fairly well on Step 1 and was advised that Step 2 was not a priority over getting sub-Is done and apps completed. Just don't want to be applying somewhere that will auto-reject my application because I haven't taken Step 2.

Thank you so much

abstract published vs abstract on poster
Posted by: Guest - 09-11-2021, 11:37 AM - Forum: How to prep for applications - Replies (1)

a little confused  by abstract & poster presentation.

Sometimes you present a poster and you have an abstract published on a specific meetings hand book (ex. neuro oncology). Is that a publication of an abstract or just a poster presentation?

  231 on USMLE Step 1
Posted by: ShireTater - 09-08-2021, 04:32 PM - Forum: USMLE - Replies (7)

Hello everyone. I would appreciate any input regarding my chances of matching into neurosurgery. I'll keep it short and sweet:

  1. I scored a 231 on the USMLE Step 1 exam.
  2. I had a family emergency that delayed my entry into 3rd year, as a result, my SubI/Aways time will be cut short.
  3. The family emergency also affected my step prep and mental focus, so I am anticipating/hoping for a higher Step 2 score.
  4. I will have ~20 publications in the field of neurosurgery at the time of application, including 5 first-author manuscripts.
  5. I do not have a home neurosurgery program, but I have networked with several neurosurgeons who may write me letters, assuming they aren't turned off by my Step 1 score.
Thank you!

  NYU

How is NYU as a program? I know historically it was a bit malignant, and is more of an operative powerhouse now. Given their smaller complement of residents, 16-18, what is their call schedule like? Are there opportunities for research throughout the years?

  Step 3

Does Step 3 matter at all for residents? Are there any fellowship programs that want to see Step 3 scores?
