Greenberg's or Fundamentals for Sub-I?

Which of these two books would you all recommend for a sub-I? Is fundamentals more trimmed down for the things you'll actually be expected to know, or is it worth investing in the big boi to see what the residents are actually learning?

How likely is it to match once you fail the first time? If one is really passionate and doesn’t care where they do residency, this must be attainable

Did any of you have a good deal of second thoughts about going into neurosurgery as medical students? I find it to be the most interesting and inspiring field in medicine but the really bad outcomes some patients experience has given me some pause about whether I will be able to emotionally handle this as a career. Did any of you have similar feelings at some points in your training?

I'm an m1 interested in a few different fields. Would having research unrelated to neurosurgery like ENT, melanoma, or Ortho research either not help or possibly even hurt my app because it might show I'm not fully committed to neurosurgery? What do you guys think?

What is the current outlook for a newly graduated resident who is fellowship-trained in functional neurosurgery? Do all of the jobs exist at large academic medical centers? What percent of your cases are actually DBS vs spine etc.? How big of a pay cut are you taking? I've heard the word on the street is functional pays super low right now.

Dual Applying in Covid Cycle

with aways cancelled and no cap on interviews (yet) is anyone planning on dual applying?
Applying into neurosurgery is no guaranteed feat even in the best conditions, so with the curveball this year I'm torn between
anesthesia and radiology as potential fallbacks. Avoiding general surgery bc I don't want to run the bowels all day.
For residents who dual applied, which backups appealed to you most?

Interested in Neurosurgery and Orthopedics

Hi all, I'm an incoming MS1 who is interested in neurosurgery and orthopedics. I was wondering if there is any advice you guys would have on figuring out if either field is right for me and how to approach med school (ie. the type of research I might do) so that I'm set up to be a strong applicant for either field in my later years. I've thought that doing spine research might be the way to go because there is an overlap there between neurosurgery and ortho but would like to get your guys' take on anything else I might want to keep in mind.

Symposium Impressions

Hey everyone, please post impressions of the program info sessions that you attend during the symposium this weekend! Would be a great way to coordinate since we all got so few.
I just got out of MGH - obviously research is unparalleled, chances for an academic career are fantastic. Residents/faculty have clearly heard about concerns regarding operative volume/autonomy, and it seems to be an area they are focused on. Cons: mostly only rotating at MGH so will miss out on community/public safety net hospital, little time spent at Children's, q5 in-house call as a senior. Clear preference for tumor work, which can be a pro if it's your interest.
