UT Houston most FMG friendly top program?
Posted by: Guest - 10-01-2026, 08:46 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (2)

Is UT Houston the most FMG friendly top program? I did observership last year and they hired 2 FMGs as interns, 1 as a pre residency fellow. Last year they took 2 FMGs with 1 pre residency fellow again

Which of the open vascular fellowships feature good exposure to high flow bypasses? Obviously BNI but how about Emory, Ogilvy, Morcos, Stanford etc?

  How much studying in residency?
Posted by: Guest - 09-26-2024, 09:00 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (3)

how much time do you actually spend studying in residency. I know for other programs like rads and derm, the schedule is more obviously way more relaxed in terms of work hours but there's lots of at home studying. I'm the type of person that would much rather learn on the job even if it means a 18 hour day. I would definitely prefer reading the literature, learning by preparing for cases, and putting together an occasional presentation/M&Ms to the grind of anki and question banks.

During M3, I loved the days where I was in the hospital but absolutely hated coming home and studying for shelf. That's the part that made me miserable. How bad is it during residency?

  Can you negotiate operative days?

I wonder if you can negotiate which days in the week to operate or to specify which days you don't (unless on call). Can you get this in contract?

Big Grin What first got you interested in Neurosurgery ?
Posted by: Guest - 09-20-2024, 05:40 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (4)

Thank you all,

I'm an Ms1 with a growing interest in Neurosurgery. I've been exploring the field more in person lately.

What first got me interested was its rigor. I'm a challenge driven person, which is why I picked Medicine. Neurosurgery seems to be the hardest specialty to do in Medicine.
Aside from that it looks to me like it has everything from elective to trauma surgeries which makes for more dynamic days. I'm also interested in Oncology, and it looks like neurosurgery can open doors to that field too.

I felt like Oncology wasn't dynamic enough for me in the day to day.
General Surgery doesn't have as much long term patient care as Neurosurgery seems to have. Especially Surgical oncology.

I'm looking for some perspective on if my reasoning is on the right track. I know I am just starting medical school, but with how competitive this field is, I want to know sooner rather than later.
