Doing research with a PD: CONS?
Posted by: ms1 - 09-19-2021, 11:03 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (10)

I am thinking of doing NS research with a PD at a mid-tier program.

I know the benefits (get to know a PD).

What what are the cons?  Would it be better to do research with a NS who is not a PD?

If I do a shit job and fuck up, will the PD tell other PDs about me???

PD = program director

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH

  Neurosurgeons leaving practice

Just curious what the impetus seems to be. For example, one of the stanford alumni (Achrol) practiced for about 6 years and is now CMO at some MRI focused ultrasound company.

How would an industry year look to residency programs?
Posted by: Guest - 09-13-2021, 04:39 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (18)

Been involved with translation of neuro-onc therapies and surgical devices during med school. Was interested in working in an industry capacity for a year between MS3 and MS4 for some further experience before applying neurosurgery. Would this shoot me in the foot for residency apps? I'm sure there will be faculty out there who think I am not committed to neurosurgery for doing some off-the-beaten-path work for a bit?

Stats:
Step 1 24X
Publications: 30+
Mix of honors and high pass throughout ms3.
One patent (surgery related)
Obtained a few industry grants >$500k.

Thanks for the input and advice.

OP here. I should mention the grants were NIH-funded, but for industry work.

Very simple: are interviews virtual this year yes or no?? Should I shell out for some nice lighting and all that? We are like a month out from interview invitations we gotta know soon

Start NS research as MS1 a good idea?
Posted by: Guest - 09-11-2021, 11:01 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (7)

I go to pass/fail school. Do u think NS research as an MS1 is a good idea? I am thinking of contacting neurosurgeons for research opportunities related to chart review and case studies.

HOWEVER, I have read on here that early research can be a negative? Someone wrote that they prefer candidates who explore all fields so what is it?

Thank you all so much!
