I believe this probably means they haven’t done very thorough application review and/or can’t decide among many applicants so just throw all the invites out there and grab all 40 or 60 first people who respond.

I really don't understand why they can't just make a "rank list" of the applicants they want, invite the first few, and as people decline, just move down the list. For a group as intellectually capable as neurosurg, you would think they would figure out a better process. The difference between you getting an interview or not can literally be if you were in the bathroom when the invite came.

I guess that's why they call it "Rush".

Or maybe someone was at an interview yesterday and our primary email backup was at work and the secondary backup took 10 minutes to respond. It's frustrating that it takes this amount of coordination and planning and it's still possible to miss the interview opportunity.

A neurosurgeon should be available and ready to act all times. If you can't handle being available to respond to an interview invite at all times, how can I trust you will be ready to promptly respond to a neurosurgical emergency in the middle of the night? This new generation is far too soft.

Or perhaps it's logical that programs would want their top choice of applicants, not the ones with the most free time. Your statement is ridiculous. This has nothing to do with being soft.
