Interview Invites 2019-2020
Since when did keeping track of whether you got a personalized message or not become a concern?

People match with 10 interviews but I hear about people every year not matching despite going on 12+ interviews. Plus, didn't charting outcomes list that 16.4 ranks is a 90% chance to match?

Honestly the problem isn't other people "taking" interviews, it's just that the people complaining weren't qualified to get them and are looking for something to blame other than themselves and the competitive selection process that neurosurgery has become.

So I’m stuck with 10 invites only. 260 multiple pubs. My away letters took a long time so missed first round of invites. Starting to think I’m screwed..
Sometimes there is more to a person than STEP 1 score and pubs. Sometimes.

But is this actually a problem since neurosurgery virtually never has unfilled seats?

A lot of people are starting to cancel interviews, I have around 10 to cancel. So there should be more interviews on the way.

I think people use it to assess whether they can still expect an invite vs. all invites were sent out in mass.

Can only speak for our program, but this is not a good metric to use to try and figure that out. The only thing it would be good for is adding another layer of unnecessary anxiety.

Any idea how many interviews to expect after the first wave? Like what percent of invites come out after primary invites?

It has to work out in the end. Even the superstars who go on 25 interviews can only match at 1 place. As someone above mentioned, 100% of the positions are filled in the match so everything works itself out.

Right all spots are filled but what I suggested is that the qualified people who go on 20+ interviews would've matched with 10 or even less. The number ranked is a security blanket just in case you drop hard on your rank list. Not suggesting people go on 4-5 interviews but if you're going on 25 then maybe think about cutting back.

It’s more about %s than anything. If you have 15 offers and only take the 10 best ones while your chances to match aren’t worse or better from a pure numbers standpoint. You are setting yourself up to not match given the competitiveness of the programs you’re selecting.
