I have ~40 offers and it'd be physically impossible to do more than 28 or 29. I won't be doing that many (fatigue, I like my home program, I want other ppl to have interviews). I also don't want ppl despairing because they think there are applicants going on 40 interviews. That would not be typical, even for ppl getting this many invitations.
I think if you have a few good interviews trumps many mediocre ones. 25 mediocre interviews will probably translate to not matching since programs are very wary this year of ppl who don't appear to "fit" even in their limited zoom interactions. I could be wrong, but I think 3-5 good interviews where places really like you are much better than two dozen where you're low on their rank-list (or unranked).
I was told 20 is the magic # this year...idk if it is easier to match this year w interviews...since programs will more likely match their home students and some good/top programs have a lot of them...
If you don’t like your home program like me, it is definitely harder to match somewhere else...or if you come from home program that is not very supportive

FWIW...quite a few PDs and chairmen I have spoken with on the trail have implicated that 15 is a completely safe and healthy # of interviews/ranks this year, and more than that is overkill.

I've heard of 20 as a safe number from my mentors as well (no math supporting this as you said). I'm curious to know if there are any stats breaking down the successful match by PGY1 slots available. For instance, interviewing at 12 programs searching for 2-3 interns as opposed to 20 programs that are looking for 1 new resident clearly confers an advantage to the applicant with fewer interviews in this scenario. Programs interviewing more than the usual amount this year throws an additional confounder into what was an already hyper-competitive application process. At the end of the day, it's useless to worry about this late in the season. Stay positive friends, it only takes 1 interview to match (bring that Mamba mentality). Happy holidays to all!

Same... combo of coming from not a very supportive home program, programs rely more on applications and take home students, phone calls post-interview...feel like everything are against me
I still only have 3 invites.. on several interview waitlists but doesn’t look like anyone is canceling..
I feel you too. I have enough interviews but even I'm worried as I would prefer a go to a new program for residency and with all these programs having so many home students (especially the programs I really like), feels like there's no way I'll be able to match at a great program outside my own

No math behind 25. 20 last year on the NRMP charting outcomes gave at least a 90% chance of matching regardless of any other application characteristics, so that's where I thought 20 would be a good number. I imagine the number will be a little higher this year due to uncertainty. However, one can absolutely match with 10-15 interviews. Just need to be a good interviewer and show the programs how you would fit with their vision and how you'd make the most of the opportunities they'd give you

You guys are being needlessly neurotic, the vast majority of applicants match at one of their top 5, if not top 3. Like, >80%. Anyone else reading this shouldn't be led to think that you even need 12 to match, much less 20. That curve you're all citing from NRMP is asymptotic, and the majority of returns are made with <10 interviews.
You guys know the top programs have multiple home students every year right

Where do you get this >80 match at their top 5 if not 3 lmao. There is no way this is right...know decent amount of people match pretty low on their list.
The data for ~80% matching at a top 3 (across all specialties) is available direct from the NRMP. For neurosurgery specifically, there was a survey done on this site in the last few years - you can find it if you search enough.
