I third this. Especially when the program (as is the case in most) lacks a lot of depth. Places like Pitt or UCSF would be OK even if they lost some faculty but most programs rely on their big names to drive the research/recruitment/funding/career opportunities (ie phone calls for fellowships/jobs) for residents. Like someone was saying in the other thread, Sinai got a huge boost by getting Mocco and Yale suffered a big loss when Cheng left, as did UCSD with Bob Carter and Chen. Turnover at the top matters.

The main problem isn't even necessarily that they left. It's that they weren't able to replace them with anyone of equal caliber.
UCSD is bigger than one to two neurosurgeons.
