Please excuse my intrusion into the neurosurgery board, but thought I'd throw an odd case out there.  I'm a radiologist, and have been shown a case of a smoothly marginated, nonenhancing lesion in the cavernous sinus.  It contains a nodular component surrounded by fluid, and the nodular component is approximately isointense to brain on various sequences.  On the coronal images, the soft tissue/nodular component is not well separated from the temporal lobe tissue above, so my primary consideration is a small encephalocele or less likely ectopic rest.  The lesion is causing a 6th nerve palsy.  A quick search has found a potentially similar case:

My question lies in the feasibility of fixing such a lesion, and if there are certain centers or individuals that would be more experienced or receptive to such a case.  Would a typical academic center have a skull base surgeon that deals with this kind of case?Thanks for any guidance.  

Has anyone heard back from Brown yet about sub-Is? I know their website says they don't look at apps until 2-3 months before the elective start date but was wondering if they started sending out decisions.

Does anyone know is which nerves carries the transmission of sensory-motor impulses from the visceral organs? Is it splanchnic nerves?
There is conflicting evidence in the literature. On the one hand, many sources told that splanchnic nerves belong to the sympathetic nervous system. On the other hand, there is information that sensory-motor impulses from the visceral organs travel along the splanchnic nerves. And there is a slight contradiction, because sensory-motor impulses usually go not in to to the sympathetic trunk, but to the dorsal ganglia. But the splanchic nerves connect just with the sympathetic trunk, and not with the dorsal ganglia.

sensory transmission pathways have been found to go to the spinal cord through the dorsal ganglia, which, to my knowledge, are not associated with splanchic nerves.

I realize the prevailing wisdom is that withdrawing from an away rotation significantly harms you with that program and may lead to loss of chance to interview. Does the same apply to withdrawing from one date after applying to two (e.g. applying to June/July but then withdrawing from June)?

Pretty stellar and busy program. If there are any students out there trying to get Sub-I spots here who will really give it their all and have some kind of sincere connection with the area. (read: q2 call style). We have a program that has been extraordinarily busy with very little fluff, I have been very satisfied.

why does it seem like med students from Stanford don’t want to stay? Seems like their stronger applicants continue to go elsewhere...

Heard the subi experience this past year was far from optimal but still.

The average number of research experiences seems to be trending upwards sharply. Are people listing posters/talks that they were 5th or 6th author on? If I include all the research experiences that I'm a co-author on then have ~25 research items. If it's only publications (including both primary and contributing authorships) and talks/posters I've been primary author on then I'm only around 10.

Whats with the new influx of programs taking 4 residents this year?
There's no way these all have the volume to take that many people, so where are they putting the residents?


These 2 have traditionally always taken 4/year, and seem to have plenty of operative volume left over still:

Some of these places should only be taking 2/year at most!!! Have fun in the research lab. Or triple-scrubbing the shunts...
Or maybe they are all back-filling spots from residents who quit or got fired?
