  Functional NSG
Posted by: curious M4 - 01-23-2018, 12:57 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (3)

Sup y'all,
just curious as to what everyone thinks about Stereotactic and functional neurosurgery and the it's prospects/future? I've attended a bunch of procedures, and it was honestly the most interesting thing I've ever seen. On the other hand, the clinic days of the functional neurosurgeon was a drag, it was mostly just battery replacements for the DBS probes, is there anyway the surgeon can outsource that work? or is it ethically reprehensible?

  Harbaugh book?
Posted by: Guest - 01-22-2018, 10:17 PM - Forum: ABNS - No Replies

Has anyone used it to study for primary ABNS exam?

It is described as "This indispensable book will help neurosurgeons and neurosurgical residents prepare thoroughly for written and oral board examinations," but I don't have a copy and can't tell if it's JUST focused on the 'neurosurgery' portion of the exam, or if it's truly comprehensive like Citow or Psarros?

Any advice appreciated.

  VSAS Dates
Posted by: SUP - 01-22-2018, 06:57 PM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (2)

So I got the invitation to VSAS today, but most of the application dates are for March/April/May of 2018 and nothing afterwards.

Do the other dates open up at a specific time? Should I just check VSAS every day until the dates for these programs show up?

  Timing of LORs
Posted by: Guest - 01-19-2018, 01:01 PM - Forum: How to prep for applications - Replies (22)

Hey all,

Just a quick question about how timing of LORs work:

My school ends rotations in June. That means I have 2 sub-I's before september hits (1 home July, 1 away August). That nets 2 letters of recommendation. How does the third letter work? Do I ask the program director at my 2nd away immediately when I get on the rotation? Or do I get the letter elsewhere?

Thanks in advance.

How do I pick my subIs?

Hi guys,
I am in the process of deciding on my subIs and wanted to seek advice on how to pick them. Are there certain criteria you guys follow in picking your subIs?

  Baylor vs. UT Houston
Posted by: Trigger - 01-18-2018, 02:37 PM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (41)

What are y'all's thoughts on the differences between the two programs? Among the things I've heard is Baylor is more established with a heavier research focus (not sure if that's detracts from the clinical training) while UTH is up-and-coming with a heavier clinical focus (and tons of trauma).

I'm planning to do an away in Houston and am trying to decide between the two.

  Electives in neurosurgery in general
Posted by: Johnd2f - 01-16-2018, 07:07 AM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (2)

Hi everyone Smile

I'm an IMG and I will do a 4 weeks elective in neurosurgery. I am searching for students that have experienced an elective in neurosurgery or who have worked with electives student in this area.

I wanted to ask you details about the role of the elective student. What do we have to do : presenting patients on round ? Typing information about patient on the computer health system ? Do we perform proceedure as lumbar puncture, stitching ? Do we scrub in, and once in the OR what is our role (give surgical tools ?) ? And lastly, do we write post op repport or is it the resident's job?

Please if you have lived this experience add as many details about what was it like : your role but also what you did wrong or you ould do differently and what you did right.

If you did another elective in another surgical area or if you know someone that has, please take part on this post.

Thank you very much to all

I'm looking for a solid Sub-I in the midwest area. Can anybody comment on the relative strengths and weaknesses of these two programs?
