  Tiers 2017
Posted by: Guest - 11-03-2017, 11:00 PM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (55)

My impression of tiers based on nebulous stuff like resident opinions and on interview invites this season:

1. UCSF, Barrow, Pitt, UCLA, MGH, Johns Hopkins, Columbia, Penn, Duke, NYU, Brigham, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Cornell, Stanford, Michigan, UVA

2. Northwestern, Emory, Jefferson, UT Southwestern, Vanderbilt, Utah, UC Irvine, Tufts, Utah, Carolinas, Baylor, USC, Miami, Rush, Wisconsin, Florida, Indiana, U Wash, OHSU

3. Rochester, Dartmouth, Brown, VCU, UNC, Beth Israel, Mayo Jacksonville, Mount Sinai, U Chicago, Buffalo, Minnesota, Georgetown, Yale, Penn State, Maryland, NIH, Wake Forest, Washington St. Louis

4. Albany, Kentucky, Inova, UT Houston, UCSD, Tenessee, UI Chicago, USF, Vermont, Rutgers, Hofstra, LSU, Henry Ford, Iowa, MUSC, Kentucky, George Washington

5. Temple, Nebraska, SUNY Upstate, Oklahoma, Einstein, Alabama, Mississippi, UI Peoria, Allegheny, New Mexico, Geisinger, West Virignia, Wayne State, Houston Methodist, St. Louis, NYMC Westchester

6. Tulane, Medical College of Wisconsin, LSU Shreveport, Scott and White, UT Galveston, Louisville, Arizona, Missouri, Cincinnati, Medical College of Georgia, Puerto Rico

I would be interested in hearing what other people think. Good luck on the rest of your interviews everyone.

  Preliminary 2018 ERAS results
Posted by: iwantmymommy - 11-03-2017, 07:39 PM - Forum: How to prep for applications - Replies (4)

So it looks like they are saying 298 applications this year.  Last year there was 278.  As expected more people put out more applications this year also.  212  of those 278 last year ranked NSG programs contingently, and 183 matched for a match rate of 86%.

My question is, can we generally expect the same trend this year?

  Interview Questions
Posted by: Guest - 11-02-2017, 12:09 AM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (1)

I thought we'd share interesting interview questions as they come.

Mine:

PD: Tell me a joke
Me: Your volume
PD: ...
Me: ...
PD: True

Naa but really. A question:

Who is your favorite philosopher and why?

  Chairman Speak
Posted by: yomomma - 11-01-2017, 06:03 PM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (2)

a few people have talked about chairman speak for letters: "will do great at your program" vs "we will try to keep them"

anyone have examples on chairman speak for post-interview interactions, specifically responses to thank yous/application updates?

  Volume
Posted by: Volume - 10-31-2017, 01:34 PM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (5)

So, I keep hearing about certain programs having lots of volume and certain programs not having lots of volume. I've actually heard that one particular nameless program is at the top in terms of volume and then I heard that the same program is actually at the bottom. Which one is it?

Volume is something that is important and should impact our rank lists, but  many of the reports I've seen seem to be based on hearsay, doximity bs, program self-report, and/or the prestige commanded by the name of the attached undergraduate institution.

Surely, scientists, we can do better.

Thus, I propose the following - average number of cases per day divided by the total number of residents. Qualifying information, such as whether or not the vast majority of cases were nerve root decompressions or brainstem schwannomas, can be added.

I'll give you a theoretical example, and then add several real-life ones once this list gets going.

Princeton Plainsboro - There were 4 rooms averaging 2 cases a day during my sub-I there. They have a children's hospital which averages 2 rooms a day with 2 cases each. So, about 12 total cases a day. There were also 12 residents on service when I was there. 2 were off for research. Thus, the volume index is 12/12 = 1.0

Hopefully whatever real-life examples get offered here will be more interesting and revealing.

  Medical College of Wisconsin
Posted by: Guest - 10-31-2017, 07:35 AM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (19)

Recently accepted an interview at Medical College of Wisconsin but did not closely read the offer letter (...was in between OR's on a Sub-I). Apparently they are on ACGME "Probationary" accreditation status, to be revisited in April 2018.

Can anyone share helpful thoughts on this matter?

  Geisinger Hotel
Posted by: Guest - 10-30-2017, 08:21 PM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (6)

Has anyone had any luck confirming the hotel reservation at the Pine Barn Inn (as instructed in our last email) for the Geisinger interview on November 10? I called and they said there are no reservations for us and they are completely booked that night (Nov 9). I tried calling/emailing the PC last week, but no response. I normally wouldn't mind waiting to hear, but it's coming up pretty quickly and I'd hate to pay for a hotel I'm not supposed to pay for...

  Step 2 CK Before Interview
Posted by: RazzleDazzle - 10-28-2017, 11:07 PM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (16)

Hey guys,

I'm making this thread in response to feedback that this topic should stay out of other threads. I know this information will be very helpful for MS3s like myself as we prepare to apply next cycle. I think the easiest thing to do is to list all the schools in the order they sent out interviews and have people bold the name of the school if they received an interview invite without having Step 2 CK on their application.

Thanks in advance! Very much appreciated.

Michigan and Cornell Spots Next Year
Posted by: curiousgoerge - 10-26-2017, 02:30 AM - Forum: How to prep for applications - Replies (10)

Would anyone be able to confirm that Michigan is taking 2 next year and Cornell is taking 1.

Going by the accreditation website it would seem like it.  Thank you!

Also is Brigham only taking 2?

And Cleveland Clinic will only be taking 2?
