So I initially was thinking academics cause I want to have a mix of cool cases, but seems like at my residency there is 2-3 big dawg surgeons who suck up all the cranial cases and refuse to do spine and then they hire like 10 spine only surgeons and will steal even a simple meningioma that comes in on general call for any of them. I imagine in private practice it is mostly degen spine, but you occasionally see meningiomas and SDH and chiaris etc you can do without having a cranial only chairmen taking the case while trading you 3 IV drug use osteo cases from their general call. Am I wrong in this viewpoint? That academics sort of sucks unless you are one of the big dawg guys at a place and if you are a grunt taking the cases the big dawgs don’t want to do then you should just go to private practice?

Sup everyone. Hope your weekends are going well. 
I’m a week into third year at a MD school in a big city. First in my family/ circle to do academics. Wanted some insight into how I’m doing and how I can improve. I feel like I’m behind relative to some of the other folks at my I situation so I’d like a genuine assessment and steps to improve (I.e you should have X many papers by Y time, prioritize sub-Is, etc)

No pubs, on 4 projects (2 first author, a 2nd, a 4th), 1 oral presentation. 
Planning on a research year next year, hopefully at my home institution. 

Please advise ! Appreciate it! 
Can provide other details if needed. Hard to gage where I’m “supposed” to be at. Not sure who I should be asking.

Thought I'd bring awareness to this shady trend among med students. Basically med students writing a crap ton of review articles and letter to the editors. We all know that letters to the editors require little to no work. Someone can write 20 of these in a month and say "I have 20+ publications" which an overworked PD may not recognize. I actually saw one med student with 50+ review articles and 17 letters to the editors (with the rest of the papers filled by low quality case studies/case series) making him close to 100 papers. Now he goes on podcasts talking about how prolific he is and shattering med student records. Additionally, I've seen other students who write a response to a letter to the editor (that was originally to their paper) and then deposit that response into pubmed themselves. 

It's no wonder why people make a joke out of the neurosurgery literature. I can't think of any other field that has such low quality literature as neurosurgery (even ortho isn't this bad). Seems like the main culprit journal who accepts this garbage research is World Neurosurgery. I'm assuming that they know that review articles tend to get many citations and consequently, will raise the impact factor of their journal. JNS seems to have a higher threshold and still accepts the best neurosurgery research. 

The solution to this problem would be to only count original research. PDs should stop encouraging this behavior as well and the journals should be held accountable.
