  Academic + Private Practice
Posted by: Guest - 12-29-2023, 12:03 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (3)

How feasible is it to work in academics and private practice at the same time?

I only know of one person at my institution that does this, and not sure if he is just a special case.

Would something like work in an academic hospital for a subspecialty like peds while also working part-time private practice be possible?

Reality of private practice skull base
Posted by: Guest - 12-28-2023, 01:15 AM - Forum: General resident issues - Replies (25)

Junior year resident interested in skull base. I’m equally uninterested in academics because of the general inefficiency and lack of motivation in house staff, which I’ve heard from friends is a fairly universal problem.

I know the skull base market is shit right now but has there ever been a market for private practice skull base? I’d be okay mixing in some spine to fill in the gaps but would like to have skull base as my primary focus. Thanks in advance, don’t want to ask around the department as PP tends to be looked down upon to here.

  Academic Job Market

Any other chiefs or graduating fellows a bit underwhelmed by the academic job market? It is crazy to go through all this training and have little control over your geography or terms of your job.

  Eras Experiences
Posted by: guest230 - 12-13-2023, 07:25 PM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (3)

What type of experiences make for a competitive neurosurgery applicant?

Currently, I have:

  • Research (could probably spread into 3 experiences given diff topics/projects)
  • Hobbies (was planning to use 1 slot for all)
  • Interest group leadership
Not sure what I should be doing to beef up my application?

I don't have any meaningful undergrad experiences (I had a retail job, if that's worth including?)

  Future of reimbursement

https://thejns.org/view/journals/j-neuro...231513.xml

Anyone else getting sick of seeing Medicare slashed 3-5% a year, while reimbursement for everything besides physicians keeps up with inflation?

We will continue to become “more efficient” to keep up with these cuts, and a lot of that is good for patients, but we’ve all seen the surgeons that rush. When is it going to be too much?

prestigious medical schools vs full ride at a regular MD school w/o home program
Posted by: Guest - 11-22-2023, 01:01 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (17)

happy thanksgiving everyone. so i got in to a medical school without a department of neurosurgery, this medical school also lets me have tuition free and also free textbooks, i still have to take loans to cover fees and living expenses. but everyone i talk to is like when it comes to neurosurgery, prestige of medical school matters especcially clinical curriculum and access to neurosurgeons in neurosurgery department. this medical school is a public school that does not have a department of neurosurgery, and also their dean likes to talk about "primary care" so i feel like i am lying for going there because i want to become a neurosurgeon, which is not primary care. i do not know what to do! i am still waiting on a decision from a school that is very well known and also has their own department of neurosurgery.
