Video Med Students Exploiting Letter to the Editors and Review Articles
Posted by: Guest - 05-24-2023, 01:02 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (29)

Thought I'd bring awareness to this shady trend among med students. Basically med students writing a crap ton of review articles and letter to the editors. We all know that letters to the editors require little to no work. Someone can write 20 of these in a month and say "I have 20+ publications" which an overworked PD may not recognize. I actually saw one med student with 50+ review articles and 17 letters to the editors (with the rest of the papers filled by low quality case studies/case series) making him close to 100 papers. Now he goes on podcasts talking about how prolific he is and shattering med student records. Additionally, I've seen other students who write a response to a letter to the editor (that was originally to their paper) and then deposit that response into pubmed themselves.

It's no wonder why people make a joke out of the neurosurgery literature. I can't think of any other field that has such low quality literature as neurosurgery (even ortho isn't this bad). Seems like the main culprit journal who accepts this garbage research is World Neurosurgery. I'm assuming that they know that review articles tend to get many citations and consequently, will raise the impact factor of their journal. JNS seems to have a higher threshold and still accepts the best neurosurgery research.

The solution to this problem would be to only count original research. PDs should stop encouraging this behavior as well and the journals should be held accountable.

  Neuroplastic/reconstructive neuro-surgery

What are your thoughts on this? It sounds very cool, but only a few top places have them. Why is that? What is the future of this area? Is it like radiosurgery or functional? Will it take off? How come more surgeons don't practice if results can be so good?

  Cringe Med Students on Twitter
Posted by: Guest - 05-19-2023, 01:56 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (41)

I hardly use social media but recently visit the cesspool that is of twitter. What’s up with these medical students tweeting out to institutions and PDs how “excited” they are for their sub-I? Sounds incredibly sycophantic to me. They also tweet out their bs research article thinking that people are going to read their low effort article. Even saw one girl posting her third year clerkship grades. What ever happened to being humble? Concerning trend if you tell me.

  AHN Sub I Prep Course
Posted by: Guest - 05-19-2023, 12:39 PM - Forum: General interest - No Replies

Hey everyone! Just a reminder that we're holding the AHN Sub I Prep Course on May 27 and 28.

We started this last year as the first ever Sub I prep Course open to all medical students. It is targeted for third years preparing to enter the intense sub-I rotations. We got a lot of positive feedback from the almost 100 attendees we had last year. We made some changes that we think will make this year even better.

The course will be two days long (Saturday and Sunday), from 8-noon both days, all through Zoom. This is about learning the actual things that will help you succeed in your sub-I's, the things no one really tells you. This is resident run completely and so everything will be unfiltered. Use the link below to sign up if you haven't and you are interested. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Do any of you here have experience with employee health screenings with existing diagnosis of ADHD currently on stimulants? Trying to figure out precisely how to navigate this in the coming months.
