How late is too late to cancel interviews?
Posted by: Guest - 12-05-2021, 02:46 PM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (9)

I have 3/4 interviews that I really am indifferent to attending at this point. Excellent programs, but I am mentally exhausted with the interview process and feel like my interview quality is going down/feeling low energy. I am thinking it is better I save my energy for programs I am really really excited about/would rank higher.

Several of these are top 20 programs, so I am thinking even if it’s really close to the date, someone would be excited to jump on the slot so it may be worth it to an applicant even if it’s annoying to the program. What do you guys think? Just go through with it or let them go and potentially irritate the PC but give another applicant a chance?

Interviews in question are happening this week and week after. I’m thinking anything before Wednesday is too late, but others maybe not?

Most female and POC friendly programs?
Posted by: Guest - 12-03-2021, 11:37 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (34)

Not sure how to judge other than looking at the residents page and counting number of women and POC. But I did notice that a place like UNC Chapel Hill is 6/14 female, which is very impressive. And strong programs in the Midwest like Mayo and WashU have very little POC. Anybody care to share their own experiences?

  Dual Applying with avg stats?
Posted by: Guest - 12-02-2021, 11:56 AM - Forum: General interest - Replies (1)

Hey everyone. I've been heavily considering dual applying neurosurgery/IM or Rads, but am wondering if this is a good idea.

Goal is to maximize for geographic preference if possible (certain east coast region). Unfortunately am worried that I'm not a great applicant so wanted to see how things would play out on my end. I don't want to go unmatched obviously, but I also don't want to end up in the middle of nowhere for 7 years. I come from a top 30 school.

Step 1: 235
Honored surgery/psych
40 papers on CV (neurosurgery related)
3 surgery device patents
Worked for a few surgical device companies (think spinal cord regeneration) during med school. Personally secured over $2M in NIH grant funding for said companies.

Step 2 CK, for next cycle

Resident here, this sentiment is widely shared. We need some sort of objective measure of medical knowledge and ability to master it. My advice, take Step 2CK and have it ready for your application next cycle if you won’t have a numerically graded Step 1.

Besides MSK are there any other places that offer a spinal oncology fellowship?

What is the point of papers like these: https://thejns.org/view/journals/j-neuro...211600.xml

Thank you, captains obvious, for pointing out the obvious? I think a ten year old not even in neurosurgery could predict this?

How do you identify good mentors that can help you match?
Posted by: Guest - 11-28-2021, 09:23 PM - Forum: International applicants - No Replies

How can you identify who would be a good mentor to start a longitudinal relationship with that can eventually help you match? I know 99% of the time it's an [unpaid] research fellowship that lasts about 3-5 years, then they write you a strong LOR and make phone calls on your behalf. But how can you identify those faculty?

I've heard of a different types of faculty that have used all their resources to successfully match past IMG students -- some are junior faculty, some are PDs, some are seniors. It just seems like there isn't that strong of a pattern to easily identify a mentor. And I'd hate to spend 3 years slaving away with someone to find out the politics don't work in my favor in the end.
