Has anybody else been hearing this on the trail? Have heard it from 3-4 places now. A couple interviewers have even strongly suggested that coming by in person would help my chances.
Is this cycle going to turn into a game of who can make the most rendezvous with these programs?

Hi all,
Im an MD1 at a bottom of the barrell US MD school interested in neurosurgery. Problem is I do not really have a home program/dept. The nearest academic medical center is 100 miles away. Any tips from others that did not have easy access to mentors on how to get involved in things that will make me competitive? I have multiple poster presentations, a publication, a patent, etc in the neurosciences (not neurosurgery) from undergrad/grad school and might be able to shadow a neurosurgeon at a local hospital but research may be incredibly hard to come by. My school has sent maybe 4 people into neurosurgery residency in the past 15 years so asking others/alumni for help is also not working out well.... I do not have goals to match at Barrow or UCSF or anything and would be very happy one day matching at northeast program like Penn State (preferreded/favorite program & location), Geisinger, Temple, Jefferson, Maryland, etc.

| What do you guys think of inter-professional workshops? |

At my med school the fuckers hold these inter-professional workshops every now and then. I was surprised to see all the hostility that some other fields expressed towards doctors. Hostility expressed openly, mind you.
Things like rude, arrogant, overpaid, privileged, monopolist were through around like facts.
Honestly, I think many of the criticisms were on-point. But a lot was overdone.
What do you guys think? Do residents have to endure such bullshit too?

| To programs interviewing 30 people per spot |

This is why I hoard interviews and plan to rank 30 programs. There is no reason that a program should be interviewing that many people per spot. Save the applicants and programs time by interviewing less.
Also no more of the “fit” bullshit. All you programs are the same “like family” shit and go on a hike or some shit once a year, might go out to dinner once a month, and all have vague hobbies your haven’t partaken in in years. I have yet to see a unique “culture” of any program. Spare me.
