PSA: Do not do an away rotation that ends after Sept.
Posted by: Guest - 05-30-2021, 10:18 PM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (4)

PSA since many applicants seem to not understand this process. This has come up on recent threads, and this should be obvious. Do not do an away subinternship that ends after September.

If you're doing a sub-i that ends after September, it means:

1) It's such a competitive program that pre-application months are all booked up, meaning you don't have a good chance of getting in
2) You won't get a letter of recommendation from that sub-internship, which could tank the rest of your application

Most programs will have unfilled subinternship spots, and many will be completely empty given the applicant clustering at the top. This means that if you are scheduled for a subinternship that ends after September, you should swap it for one at a less competitive program (probably ranked ~#20-25 or lower where there will be more availability) which will dramatically increase your chances of matching this cycle, and matching well.

Y'all need to strategize more. It's not an easy process, and you're not making it easier on yourselves. Good luck.

  Upcoming Neurosurgery Conference
Posted by: Guest - 05-20-2021, 02:15 PM - Forum: General interest - No Replies

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know about an upcoming conference focused on global neurosurgery and how neurosurgeons across the world approach some of the more common neurosurgical pathologies.

It's going to be more interaction-friendly than zoom talks : it's case-based and round table format. Questions can be asked in real time and voted up for visibility (like reddit).

Ideal for residents and medical students and most importantly, its free:

  Attrition Rate In Neurosurgery
Posted by: Guest - 05-17-2021, 04:44 AM - Forum: General interest - Replies (24)

Is any other medical student concerned about the attrition rate in neurosurgery? Yes I love neurosurgery but ultimately I would like to be able to finish residency otherwise my degree will be an expensive piece of worthless paper. Going through this website has me really concerned about the number of residents that get fired even as seniors. Why is the attrition in this specialty higher than other surgical specialties like ortho or Gen surg?

  Upcoming interview season?
Posted by: Guest - 05-15-2021, 04:25 PM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (8)

Any chatter about what will happen with interviews this year? A few years ago I had to take out a loan to cover the cost of travel just for the privilege of having attendings address me by the wrong name, review charts on Epic, and surf the internet during my interviews. OB/GYN and ophtho are doing virtual interviews followed by optional second look weekends (after programs have submitted rank lists). My program is waiting for guidance from a governing body. It won’t be a good look for the field if AANS/CNS don’t follow suit... anyone have inside information?
