  NYU?
Posted by: Guest - 05-15-2021, 03:04 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (12)

Hi everyone - looking at programs in NY to apply for this coming year. Looks like the consensus is that NYU is the premier NYC training program? Their dept. doesnt' seem to have particularly large names in the field - and looks like they aren't a research oriented program?

Additionally, do residents there have to deal with the scut work associated with the legendary NYC nursing unions and what not?

  Having doubts
Posted by: Guest - 05-11-2021, 09:13 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (7)

Not sure what to do. Competitive applicant (265+, 35+ pubs, strong letters). Have a subI lined up at a great program. Have been infatuated with the field since undergrad.

Having second thoughts as of late. Plan on starting a family in residency. Concerned my passion for the field will wane once I start having children and will end up like many residents/attendings I've seen who seem bitter, regretful and just generally unpleasant. Have not been able to find a field in medical school that I have nearly as much passion for- doing something else would seem like just a job.

Anyone else struggled with this?

At what drain output rate is it reasonable to consider a clamp trial?
Posted by: Guest - 05-11-2021, 07:28 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (2)

I'm sure this depends on a lot of other things including the clinical picture, but assuming you have an EVD in and trying to maintain a normal ICP of around 10 cm H2O, how much should the patients be draining per day before you think its reasonable to do a clamp trial?

  3rd year shelf exams/grades
Posted by: Guest - 05-11-2021, 09:35 AM - Forum: General interest - Replies (4)

been getting B's & C's on shelf exams during the 3rd year.....is that too low for neurosurgery? How are 3rd year grades looked at by residency directors? Its so random at times. Idk if I will honor anything

Imaging pearls to distinguish acute vs. chronic hydrocephalus
Posted by: neuromedstu - 05-08-2021, 01:13 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (3)

Hello,

I often see acute hydro thrown into rads reports which I’m assuming is in contradistinction to chronic hydro.

I haven’t been able to find much online in terms of radiographic features that would help you distinguish one versus the other

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

When did you know you wanted to be a neurosurgeon?
Posted by: thoutful - 05-08-2021, 08:53 AM - Forum: General interest - Replies (3)

Hi all

Applying to med school and have an opportunity to do an accelerated neurosurg program at a school I like and a program I like. I also however have a full tuition scholarship at my local school and cant decide what to do. I have years of neuroscience background but am not sure I am absolutely committed to neurosurg. I at the moment think I am very interested in it and can't see myself being happy doing something non-neuro related. The school with the full scholarship does not have a strong home program nor do they match many people into neurosurg residencies. Not sure what to do..

  Neurocritical Care

What do practice patterns look like with this fellowship option available to us in residency? Strictly limited to people in skull base/vascular/tumor? Or could other specialties do it and make it worth while? Seems like a good/valuable skill set to have regardless of subspecialty. Thanks

Well-known for endovascular. How is their residency program in terms of research, volume, autonomy, culture, etc.?

  Hershey Med Neurosurg?
Posted by: Brainboy - 05-05-2021, 03:11 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (1)

Any thoughts on Herhsey's neurosurgery program? Like the area, had an opportunity to speak with some current students/residents/attendings and liked all of my interactions. Seems like a decent program I would be happy at. Harbaugh stepping down is sad but he seems like he deserves it and I felt confident in the attends I spoke with.

  Neuroanatomy for sub-i's
Posted by: Guest - 05-04-2021, 10:15 PM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (1)

How best to study neuroanatomy for sub-internships? I know about Rhoton, neurosurgical atlas, etc but these seem clunky and it's so hard to learn anatomy from static images which are often disorienting. Any recommendations?
