Is any other medical student concerned about the attrition rate in neurosurgery? Yes I love neurosurgery but ultimately I would like to be able to finish residency otherwise my degree will be an expensive piece of worthless paper. Going through this website has me really concerned about the number of residents that get fired even as seniors. Why is the attrition in this specialty higher than other surgical specialties like ortho or Gen surg?

Might be late to this, but why did the Puerto Rico program lose accreditation? any idea what happened to the residents?

Any chatter about what will happen with interviews this year? A few years ago I had to take out a loan to cover the cost of travel just for the privilege of having attendings address me by the wrong name, review charts on Epic, and surf the internet during my interviews. OB/GYN and ophtho are doing virtual interviews followed by optional second look weekends (after programs have submitted rank lists). My program is waiting for guidance from a governing body. It won’t be a good look for the field if AANS/CNS don’t follow suit... anyone have inside information?

Hi everyone - looking at programs in NY to apply for this coming year. Looks like the consensus is that NYU is the premier NYC training program? Their dept. doesnt' seem to have particularly large names in the field - and looks like they aren't a research oriented program?

Additionally, do residents there have to deal with the scut work associated with the legendary NYC nursing unions and what not?

Not sure what to do. Competitive applicant (265+, 35+ pubs, strong letters). Have a subI lined up at a great program. Have been infatuated with the field since undergrad. 

Having second thoughts as of late. Plan on starting a family in residency. Concerned my passion for the field will wane once I start having children and will end up like many residents/attendings I've seen who seem bitter, regretful and just generally unpleasant. Have not been able to find a field in medical school that I have nearly as much passion for- doing something else would seem like just a job. 

Anyone else struggled with this?

I'm sure this depends on a lot of other things including the clinical picture, but assuming you have an EVD in and trying to maintain a normal ICP of around 10 cm H2O, how much should the patients be draining per day before you think its reasonable to do a clamp trial?

been getting B's & C's on shelf exams during the 3rd year.....is that too low for neurosurgery? How are 3rd year grades looked at by residency directors? Its so random at times. Idk if I will honor anything

I often see acute hydro thrown into rads reports which I’m assuming is in contradistinction to chronic hydro. 

I haven’t been able to find much online in terms of radiographic features that would help you distinguish one versus the other

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
