  AANS Envision

Posted on behalf of Dr. Asher:

Dear friends:

I’m making a personal appeal to you and your colleagues to participate in the first of our AANS Envision webinars at 8 Eastern on March 30. These interactive sessions are designed to bring together the community of neurosurgery to discuss issues of great importance to international society, our specially, and the practice of medicine writ large.

Achieving our objectives of widely disseminating important information and engaging individuals at all stages of education, training, and practice in a national dialogue, is necessarily dependent on widespread participation. It is particularly important for the younger members of our community, particularly medical students and residents, to be involved in this type of exchange, as you will define and create the future of neurosurgical practice.

A link to the Envision webpage and registration is listed below. This program is offered free of charge to anyone interested in participating.

I thank you advance for your support. I’d also greatly appreciate your assistance in spreading the word about this important new program.

Sincerely,
Anthony L. Asher, MD, FAANS
Treasurer, American Association of Neurological Surgeons

PGY4 openings for next academic year?
Posted by: Guest - 03-24-2021, 10:46 AM - Forum: Job openings - Replies (22)

I'm a current PGY3 in good standing, just unimpressed by my program and location. Does anybody know of any PGY4 openings starting in July?

What is the best resource to use as a junior resident to learn how to manage common neurosurgical issues (subdural, epidural, spine fractures)

Less interested in the surgical steps (many great resources for that) but rather the management on consultation

Total waste to do sub-i after Sept 15th?
Posted by: Guest - 03-23-2021, 04:47 PM - Forum: Sub-internships - Replies (5)

Is there any point at all in doing a sub-i after Sept 15th? I imagine it's a total waste since you'd be left without a letter of rec from that program for your application. Better idea to just do a sub-i at a lower-tier program in August instead?

  Programs this cycle: 2020-2021
Posted by: Guest - 03-22-2021, 10:23 PM - Forum: On the trail - Replies (5)

Hi everyone,

I know that most, if not all, were unable to do aways this year. That being said, was hoping to start a thread where people can provide whatever insight they gained on the trail this year about programs (e.g., were certain programs transparent about their case load - and did it surprise you positively, negatively, etc. Any really cool perks at another program?).

Any programs that people ranked way higher than they initially thought they would? Hope this can be of help to the rising class of M4s.

  LOR

I have been working in a neurosurgery research lab under a PhD who works under an MD. I have never really met the MD. I have gotten research pubs/abstracts/posters in this lab. How do I approach getting a letter of recommendation from the MD? Is that fine to do? If the LOR only contains research experiences and no clinical time is that also fine?

Thinking about doing a sub-I at Emory, can anyone talk about the experience?

Why is high program volume a detractor for some?
Posted by: Guest - 03-22-2021, 02:43 PM - Forum: General interest - Replies (10)

Reading through the comments of this year's match + programs, people often say that high program volume is a detractor for some people. Why is this the case? I thought its known that more reps = better outcomes, surgically. Why go into a surgical residency with a lack of interest in operating? Is there something I'm missing?
